In an exclusive conversation, we had the privilege of speaking with internationally acclaimed artist, muralist, and filmmaker Tysen Knight about his innovative initiative—the Tysen Knight Art Experience. Known for his vibrant pop and street art style, Tysen has made a name for himself both as a creator and a mentor. In this interview, he shares the inspiration behind his program and how it continues to empower budding young artists.
Interviewer: Tysen, you’ve achieved incredible success as an artist and filmmaker. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the Tysen Knight Art Experience?
Tysen Knight: Thank you. The idea for the Tysen Knight Art Experience came from my belief that art can transform lives. I’ve been fortunate to experience that transformation firsthand. I wanted to create something that could inspire young artists to believe in their potential. It’s about showing them that the path to success isn’t just theoretical—it’s been walked by someone like them.
Interviewer: The program includes the Positively Negative Space MoxieBox Art Kit. Could you share more about how that works?
Tysen Knight: Absolutely. The MoxieBox Art Kit is the starting point of the experience. It’s a hands-on way for students to explore the concept of positive and negative space in art while also discovering their own creativity. Each kit comes with liquid chalk markers, a wooden easel, and a 10-page Moxie Manual that I designed to guide them through the process.
Interviewer: That sounds incredible. How do you personally connect with the students during the experience?
Tysen Knight: The connection starts with a short video introduction where I share my journey and encourage them to dream big. But the real magic happens when I walk into the room. I collaborate with the students as they work on their projects, share stories from my career, and answer their questions. It’s a very interactive and personal experience.
Interviewer: You mentioned collaboration. How do the students incorporate their own creativity into the lessons?
Tysen Knight: The beauty of the program is that it’s all about individuality. While the students work on a project inspired by my style, they add their own words, images, and feelings to the canvas. It’s their story, expressed through the techniques we explore together.
Interviewer: What’s the highlight of the full-day experience?
Tysen Knight: For me, it’s seeing the students’ reactions when they view one of my original artworks with 3D glasses. It’s a moment of awe and inspiration. And when they share their completed pieces, it’s powerful to see how they’ve connected their internal motivation with what they’ve learned. Those moments are priceless.
Interviewer: You’ve been recognised worldwide for your contributions to art. How does mentoring fit into your vision as an artist?
Tysen Knight: Mentoring is an extension of my work. Art gave me a voice and a purpose, and I want to help others find the same. The accolades are great, but the most fulfilling part of my journey is knowing I can make a difference in someone else’s.
Interviewer: Your program has clearly had a profound impact. What’s next for the Tysen Knight Art Experience?
Tysen Knight: We’re looking to expand the program to reach more schools and communities. I want to continue making art accessible and inspiring for young people, showing them that their creativity has the power to shape their future.
The Tysen Knight Art Experience is more than an art lesson; it’s a transformative journey led by an artist who understands the power of creativity. With a unique blend of hands-on learning, mentorship, and inspiration, Tysen Knight is shaping the next generation of artists and dreamers—one canvas at a time.
